Bang. Pew. Thwarp. Chrrrr. Those are the sounds that Call of Duty games seem to make now. If there's one thing I've learned about the recent games in the Call of Duty franchise is that they're way too loud and crazy; heck I'd even go as far to say that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier had a better campaign than Modern Warfare 3 due to how calm it was in areas. If Activision wants to stop just some of the few haters of the franchise and get them on their side, they need to make the game a little less quiet.
So why is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare known as the best Call of Duty out there? Because it's set in the future? Because it has great story telling? Because of it's multiplayer? Personally, I think it's none of that. If you compare Call of Duty 4 to the more recent games "World at War", "Modern Warfare 2", "Black Ops" and "Modern Warfare 3", you'll realise how calm it actually was. Remember that sniper scene when you were a younger version of Price? That was an intense yet worthy fight for the franchise and is the one scene almost every gamer who has played CoD4 will remember. And what about infiltrating the boat? It was calm, quiet and only got loud when it needed to. Sure, there were some crazy scenes in the game, but above all, it tried to stay calm.
Let's move onto Modern Warfare 2, and oh boy is it a loud game. Things got rough from the start, where you'd be in high speed chases or trying to blow up this and trying to blow up that such as the scene when infiltrating the prison. There were also many scenes where you'd just be ambushed all the time, like when trying to get intel from a house, or fighting your way through the Favela and even when making your way through a war between Shepard's and Makarov's men.
Black Ops was the same from the very start; there's the very first scene when you're in the bar and you're attacked after twitchy people walked through the doors. And what about when you're trying to blow up a rocket before it launches and then making your way through endless amounts of soldiers? And then there's the "Rebirth" mission where you play as Mason and then the same mission but as Hudson. Again: too loud.
Modern Warfare 3 is the loudest of course, from the Eiffel tower being destroyed to the subway chase to the bombers of London. I needn't say no more.
And then we move onto Black Ops II, which has yet to be released, but behind the "why Call of Duty sucks" articles, I have seen a few articles highlighting that it will be the best Call of Duty ever. And it won't. Why? Shouldn't that be obvious by now? The worst thing of all it's set in the future which means that the explosions will just be louder than before. From what I've seen from the game in all of it's demos is destruction, explosions and bullet zips, something every Call of Duty, bar the original 4, tends to have too much of.
So sure, Black Ops 2 will sell, but once again, Activision will not get the proper audience it's targeted for (the adults) and they'll still get the audience they impress the most: the children. This is why I think Call of Duty 4 is still know to this day as the best Call of Duty, and because it's not the loud pile of shit the other games have been. You might not have thought of this as a reason, but could it be in your eyes?
