I want the PS Vita on the exact day it comes out (22 February) and so do millions of other people around the world. And although I say this, the reality of it is… the PS Vita is nothing special. It’s just a handheld console like any other. So why do I still want it?

Now I don’t have a Nintendo 3DS myself, but I have tried it a few times. The Nintendo 3DS is also nothing special besides the fact that it drowns itself in pretending that 3D will sell the handheld, when it’s not. People bought (or buy if you’re talking present terms) the 3DS because it’s the next DS. People want the next best thing all the time, and I think that’s why I want the PS Vita. Sort of. Let’s go through the features of the Vita and where I, with what I already own, can get them… just for a bit of fun.

  • Welcome Park – These are just a few small games which not only are fun, and not only show you how to begin your journey in the world of the Vita, but when you think about it, they help your brain… I could just use Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training on the DS.
  • Camera – Well I’ve heard the camera isn’t that good anyway, and I could just use my 16 Megapixel camera anyway.
  • Browser – I got a browser on my PC, and even my Phone.
  • Music Player – OK… I need one of them again since my iTouch is dead. (Boo.)
  • Party – There’s Xbox Live parties.
  • Trophies – I can get those on the Playstation 3.
  • Social Networking – Where can’t you get that nowadays?
  • Near – OK that’s a pretty cool and unique feature, I must admit.
  • Playstation Store – Do I need to tell you where you can get this?

I think it’s the games which is making me buy this. I mean I know you can get Uncharted 1-3 for the Playstation 3, but you might as well play the game which tells the story of Drake before the first Uncharted. There’s also Wipeout 2048, which is like any Wipeout game, but of course uses the PS Vita’s controls. I could go through all the launch games and future games, and of course some will simply be Vita remakes of games, while others will broaden a franchises universe. But I think the biggest reason why myself and others will buy the Vita is just like any other new handheld. It’s mostly a mental phase, where something at the back of your mind is telling you to buy the next best thing to a handheld. The biggest example on where this happens is with the iPhone/iTouch. With every iPhone comes just a few extra features. It’s got the same apps and the same shape and design. The only differences tend to be a change of placement for your accessories, like where to put in your headphones, or a slightly enhanced camera. That, and just a few added software. I had a friend who would tell me otherwise, but I still do this day think that the next iPhone is just a recycled iPhone, only with implants.

If a handheld wants to “properly” blow a person away, it needs to do something we’ve actually never seen before. One of these days, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or even Apple need to come to CES, or E3 and do a stunt like create a handheld that can do hologram calls. And yes, I do mean like the ones in Star Wars (haha).
